Hookah is a popular way to relax and enjoy aromatic smoke, but many people make mistakes that can ruin the entire experience. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced user, avoiding these mistakes will improve the taste, duration, and quality of your smoke.
1. Poorly prepared tobacco
How to avoid:
- The tobacco should be loose in the hookah bowl, not too compressed.
- Don't put too much tobacco in - air must circulate freely
- Remove excess molasses if using heavily soaked tobacco.
If you didn't know:
- Hookah tobacco comes steeped in molasses (syrup) which adds moisture and flavor. However, some tobaccos can be over-steeped, meaning they contain too much liquid. This can cause the smoke to become "wet" and taste too sweet or even bitter.
- Removing excess molasses means gently squeezing the tobacco with your hands or laying it on a paper towel to remove excess liquid. This will help you achieve a balance – the tobacco will be moist enough for a good smoke, but not too moist to make it more enjoyable.
- It is important to note that too much molasses can clog the pores in the tobacco, making it difficult for air to circulate and making smoking less enjoyable.
2. Too much or too little coal
How to avoid:
- If you put in too much charcoal, the smoke will be too hot and unpleasantly bitter.
- If you put too little, the tobacco will not heat properly and the smoke will be weak.
- Use 2-3 pieces of natural charcoal for optimal temperature.
3. Using bad coal
How to avoid:
- Use natural coconut charcoal – it lasts longer and doesn't change the taste of the smoke.
- Quick-burning coals can be practical, but they often give off an unpleasant smell and taste.
- The charcoal must be fully glowing before you place it on the foil or HMD.
4. Incorrect use of water in the base
How to avoid:
- The water level should cover the bottom of the hookah tube by about 1-2 cm.
- Too much water creates resistance when drawing in, and too little does not filter the smoke properly.
- Experiment with cold water, ice, or adding fruit for a better taste.
5. Bad foil or HMD setting
How to avoid:
- If you use foil, make sure it is tightly wrapped.
- The holes in the foil must be evenly spaced.
- If you use an HMD (heat management device), make sure it is not too closed as this stifles the embers.
6. Improper cleaning of the hookah
How to avoid:
- Wash the base and hose with warm water after each use.
- Thoroughly clean all parts of the hookah every 3-5 uses.
- A dirty hookah changes the taste and can cause unpleasant odors.
7. Incorrect handling of the hose
How to avoid:
- If you are using a classic hose with a metal wire inside, do not bend it too much so that it does not break.
- If the hose is not washable, change it regularly to avoid flavor buildup.
8. Smoking for too long without a break
How to avoid:
- Rolling too long and too often heats the tobacco too much.
- Take breaks between pulls to keep the temperature optimal.
Proper preparation and maintenance of the hookah are key to a perfect experience. Avoiding these mistakes will improve flavor, smoke density and overall enjoyment.
Enjoy hookah the right way!
