Hookah culture: Rules and etiquette

Hookah, Shisha, Hokaah, or in Croatian water pipe, is a popular instrument for smoking flavored tobacco today. Hookah smoking has always been and will be an experience that brings people together and connects them in a shared moment of enjoyment.

However, as the popularity of hookah increases, some of the traditional customs and rules surrounding hookah smoking may be forgotten or ignored. Therefore, to help you better understand the rules of conduct and etiquette when smoking hookah, here are some unofficial guidelines:

    1. "House Rules" - If you are a guest, always follow your host's rules. If you are abroad, keep in mind their customs and traditions so as not to offend your hosts.

    2. Who has the right to the first smoke? The person who sets up the hookah has the right to smoke first. The person to their left is responsible for maintaining the coals. If you set up the hookah and take care of the coals, this may mean that you have the right to a longer round. Also, some rules say that the person who purchased the hookah and/or tobacco has the right to smoke longer, if they so desire.

    3. Smoking order - Hookah smoking is done clockwise, which means that once you are finished, you hand the hose to the person on your left.

    4. How to hand over the hose? - When handing over the hose, make sure that the end of the hose is not pointed towards the person you are giving it to.

    5. Right hand - Hookah is traditionally smoked holding the hose in the right hand, as in some cultures the left hand is considered unclean.

    6. Hookah Place - Traditionally, it is believed that hookahs should be placed on the floor, not on tables or raised platforms.

    7. Don't blow smoke in the face of others - When smoking, be careful not to blow smoke in the face of the person next to you.

    8. Smoking a hookah with multiple hoses - If someone else is smoking, let them finish before it's your turn. If you're smoking with more than one person, plug your hose so you're not just sucking in air.

    9. Hygienic Smoking - Promote hygienic hookah smoking. Always use hose attachments and do not share the hose with others. If you are sick, it is best not to smoke with friends.

    10. How to behave when it's your turn? - When it's your turn, place the hose in your lap, not on the table. When you're done smoking, wrap the hose around the pipe to keep it safe.

    11. Smoking Time - It is believed that each participant should have about 2-3 minutes to smoke the hookah. If you want to spend more time perfecting your smoke ring smoking technique, do so in your free time.

    12. Help the host choose the flavor - The host should allow guests to help him choose the flavor of hookah to smoke, allowing everyone to enjoy the shared experience.

    13. Inform about the contents of the hookah - If you smoke something other than tobacco in your hookah, inform other smokers about the contents so they know what they are smoking.
